I am going to start eating organic as much as I can - considering even grocery fresh foods are covered with pesticides and tons of chemicals. With there being thousands of diseases out there related to eating habits, I am not going to take a chance.

I noticed some pretty amazing packaging design in that store, hopefully there are some local organic shops nearby that have designers on staff. If so, this would be an amazing career to explore.
Some items I purchased with great packaging!:

collective art

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 247px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_e288seGLwJc/TBV3aLMsC-I/AAAAAAAAATw/11cdesuF7r0/s320/animal.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5482419412959759330" />
Animal Collective is my favorite band, so I decided to make an interpretation piece.

Blue Ampersand Photography

New project! I downloaded a nice little app called "candybar" and it led me to icon possibilities. I went ahead and created some nice adobe icons: here

If you are interested in having these for your adobe icons, email me at jessicapine@gmail.com and I will send you the PNGs and instructions on how to apply them. Or, If you have some other adobe applications you would like to be to render (i.e. fireworks, incontext, etc) let me know and I would be happy to make you some.

Also I am very happy to share that I sold two logos on brandbucket, wrazz and yumjunkie.

And here is another logo that I came up with for scrawk.com, which hopefully will be sold someday!

<img src=http://s3images.coroflot.com/user_files/individual_files/295427_talpWha7bxffy4vQJIYcaB8Te.png

LOGO

I have been in somewhat of a logo phase for a while, sites like logopond, brandbucket and iheartlogo have been in my top views. I have one set up on wordpress at www.jessicapine.wordpress.com but I feel like it is too cluttered with too many things.

I want a portfolio that is simple and has only my best designs featured on it. I want to show off my work in a different, visually better.. way. I have started to create it on a separate blogger account.. and it is featured here:

www.jpinedesign.blogspot.com

Before I set up the site I sat down and tried to think how I wanted it to look. At first, I thought it would be best to keep it simple and professional, considering I need to boost that image anyway since I am graduating soon. I have been doing digital texture collages for years, and even though I would like to grow up out of it somewhat I thought it would probably be successful to keep my site in that same collage look.. for a couple of reasons. I want my site to be original and true to my aesthetic. I started messing around with some different images I had, and became happy with what turned out. I know I will probably get tired of this look in a couple of months (which usually happens), so all I need to do is just change the image.. because the layout is pretty much one big background image.

I have some knowledge of CSS and HTML, so I messed around with the position and margin placements of certain sections. I find myself liking small text better, I feel that it fits better with the style of the background image. I used the script Mr. Babcock shared with us - the lightwindow script - to link to each thumbnail image. This will hopefully bring my site to a more sophisticated feel - that shows I can be creative and clean at the same time.

My basic inspiration to making this site was checking out a lot of the student portfolio web sites. I really enjoyed looking through most of them, and the aspect I turned out liking most of each of these is the thumbnail use of the images - and the shadowbox/lightwindow script used to enlarge them.

I feel that this may take a while to resize and link all of the pieces I want to be featured on my site, but I know in time once I have everything on there I would like to have it will look clean and organized.

Since I did use blogger, I took some advantage of the gadgets you can add on. I added in just a simple links sidebar gadget -- which these links link directly to the URL of the category page. This was a lot easier to do rather than just putting in links manually. I really enjoy everything about blogger and how easily customizable (and free) it is.

I have been interested in web design for quite some time, I am still not sure if I would like to consider it as a career (because I love commercial graphic design too much) but hopefully someday I can count it as a hobby or freelance work in the future. I feel like all I need to do now is learn Adobe flash and Dreamweaver. My goal is to learn how to do interesting motion work and maybe incorporate that knowledge into my personal web site. www.mk12.com has been my inspiration for wanting to learn flash, I have been following them for quite some time. You may have seen some of their work in the movie Stranger than Fiction and some other commercials. They are from Kansas City.

Since I have quite a few college assignments that have to do with Identity and stationery set design, I decided to spice it up a bit by putting those designs in real looking images. I found an image of a hand holding a card, an envelope, and a grungy piece of paper. I used these images to make my designs seem more realistic. I really like how this turned out, and I think I will use this idea to display most of my things in my senior show this Fall.

I still have some more to do with the site, but it is coming along pretty quickly. I would like to add some sort of contact information area that either shows comments or e-mails me comments. I'll try to get that in there somewhere before I finish the site.

#4 > Photoshopped Packaging

I have been really interested in Package Design since the start of my sophomore year at college, and I really would like to expand my skills on the rendering technique and design when it comes to digital packaging ideas. I was looking through this web site I was reccommended, TheDieLine.com, (on my delicious) and I saw a couple of things that I would like to re-create

ORIGINAL

STUDY

Most of this technique consisted of using various sizes and opacities with a soft brush. I made multiple layers at first, blending and erasing as I was going along. I didn't find the exact texture of the orange but I came close to it by finding a sand texture from cgtextures.com, a wonderful free stock image web site. I used some blending modes on the textures and type to make it look like it is layed on the bag - an attempt, at least.

INTERPRETATION [revised]

I came across finding a company called True North, a brand I've never heard before, who makes nut snacks. I decided not to use any of their imagery - they have specialty nut mixes but I decided just to use a pistachio image rather than their pistachio crisps. I kept with the same bag technique as I did in the study, just minor shape changes. I wanted to do something simple, and not overwhelming to the product -- so I did that by using minimal type and graphics.

The only concern I may have with this finished piece is that it does not look as round.. or "full" of nuts as I would like it to look. I think I may go back and make it look a little more crinklier by adding more sharp values with the soft brush.

I am also considering getting into this a little deeper by doing more products with the same design, like dried cranberries or another type of nut.

#3 > Vector study

I really have not got into vector art that much, and I know most of everything I use is made in photoshop - and I would like to get away from that. I noticed that there is a lot of art that is created today that uses vector and illustrator - and I would like to get out of my own boat and try this for a change. I really would like to get into more of character and animal designs used with vector - I see a lot that animals and images like this are used for trendy logos and mascots - and also with identity brading. Here is a sample I saw of the Milky-Way donkey that I would like to re-create.

original

original........................................... study

Here is my interpretation. I decided to do an owl, because it seems they have a lot of shapes that can overlap. I basically used a lot of circles and the pen tool.. and also used the decorative pattern the donkey has for inspiration.

I decided to use this and drag it into photoshop to add more textures and visual elements. My friend Denise wanted me to come up with some ideas for Main Street Cafe, a venue she owns that has shows and poetry nights for people .. usually 24 and under. I think I am going to show her this idea as a flier for her venue. The only changes I made to the vector owl is the color, and I used levels to change that. I added in another texture as well, and overlayed the owl over it so the texture will show through.

<img style="cursor: pointer; STUDY

I came across this piece today and fell in love with it. I have a huge interest in designing logos - but a lot of the times they usually come out simple - I want to do something creative with elegance.. a lot of logo designs I do seem to be strict in hard edge and box shape. I want to force myself into making designs more organic and free flowing and would like to get out of my realm of hard edge texture work.

I started out tracing and making the lines in illustrator, I found it difficult to make the lines as smooth as they needed to be - perhaps I should practice more on trying to create organic shapes with more roundedness and calligraphic quality. I added in a gradient to the vector and background to make it pop a little more, as well as adding a drop shadow. I can't decide if I would rather make a personal name logo or a mock business logo - or maybe just an art graphic.

Original image here

Here is a version of my name in that technique.. I feel like this should be a practice version.. I am considering re-creating this in maybe a different word and also a whole new piece - maybe for a poster promotion of some sort. I used the same technique but I added drop shadows, inner shadows, outer glows, and radial gradients.

I then looked for a background leather texture. To create the fuzzy effect of the leather, I duplicated the layer with an opacity and moved the second layer down a little bit to make the bumps more jagged - like the original.

The next step was to re-create the blurs. Before this, I needed to mess around with the perspective, so it looks like it is laying on top of the background. I used the free transform tool > perspective to adjust the depth. I applied this on both the text layer and the background layer. I used the blur tool (after making selections of certain areas of the text layer) to create the depth and sharp focus quality.

I then adjusted the background to make it seem apart of the text also - by blurring it and adding a vignette as well as layer masking to create the reds / browns.

Here is my final creation of the first project. I chose to do a poster for an event that is coming up, that I had previously designed for for the career expo for my job - I like how it turned out. The textures are some old books that I cut up which my boyfriend took some photos of - the texutures really help out with defining the perspective of each panel.
